TOWING WITH TECH

HaulGauge measures tongue weight, pin weight, payload, and gross combined weight in real-time with an OBD-II connector that communicates wirelessly via Bluetooth with an app on your iPhone or Android device.

Proper setup when towing or hauling requires knowing trailer weight, tongue weight, etc. Obtaining these measurements in the past has been difficult, requiring trips to the scale, a tape measure, pen, paper, and so on. These challenges mean measurements are taken infrequently, if at all. Drivers are left making assumptions about what they tow.

HaulGauge provides tow/haul measurements so there is no more guessing. HaulGauge makes it simple and quick. Since measurements are taken while the customer is doing their normal setup, it can be done every time. You will have peace of mind and confidence when they know what they tow.

HaulGauge measures these in real-time with an OBD-II connector that communicates wirelessly via Bluetooth with an app on your iPhone or Android device.

HaulGauge measures:

  • Tongue weight
    • Keep tongue weight within the hitch and vehicle’s rated capacities.
    • Compare tongue weight to trailer weight to verify trailer is properly loaded.  Tongue Weight should be around 10-15% of Gross Trailer Weight (weight of trailer and cargo).
    • Save money on expensive tongue weight gauges
    • Convenient. No more hassle of using a bathroom scale to find tongue weight.
    • Safety. Proper tongue weight is key to safe towing and trailer sway avoidance. Use HaulGauge to get it right and tow safe.
  • Pin weight
    • Keep pin weight within the hitch and vehicle’s rated capacities.
    • Compare pin weight to trailer weight to verify trailer is properly loaded.  Pin Weight should be roughly 20-25% of Gross Trailer Weight.
    • Know how to adjust cargo postioning for a safe ride.
    • Proper pin weight is key to safe towing and trailer sway avoidance. Use HaulGauge to get it right and tow safe.
    • Convenient. Measure pin weight while trailer is connected.
  • Payload
    • See real time how payload is changing.
    • Avoid exceeding vehicle’s payload limits.
    • Use Payload to estimate load charges.
    • Peace of Mind. No more guessing. Based on manufacturers vehicle payload recommendations, easily decide if overloaded.
  • Weight distribution
    • Knowing weight distribution hitch is correctly set up, gives peace of mind and confidence.
    • Convenient.  App measures automatically without the use of tape measure, pen and paper.
    • Safety. Improper adjustment affects sway control.
    • Achieve correct adjustments.
    • Verify weight distribution hitch was accurately installed.
  • Gross combined weight
    • Measures Gross Combined Weight (GCW includes vehicle, cargo, passengers, and trailer)
    • Peace of Mind. No more guessing. Based on manufacturers vehicle towing recommendations, easily decide if overloaded.
    • Convenient. No longer need to drive to a scale.
    • Saves money and time. HaulGauge will display the weight within seconds of driving.
    • Safety. Knowing the total weight of the trailer is necessary for a safe set up.

What vehicles will HaulGauge work with?

Gasoline vehicles that are 1996 or newer
Diesel vehicles that are 2004 or newer
Gross Combined Weight measurement requires an automatic transmission
The Weigh feature, which weighs the vehicle and anything attached to it, requires an automatic transmission. The other functions (Payload, Tongue Weight, Pin Weight, and Weight Distribution) use vehicle pitch, so they will work with a manual transmission.

Vehicle FAQ’s
What if I have air suspension? Air bags? Auto leveling? Will HaulGauge work?

In almost every case, yes.

The main Weigh feature, which weighs the vehicle and anything attached to it, will function just fine with airbags/auto-leveling, etc.
Air bags (manually adjusted)

The other functions (Payload, Tongue Weight, Pin Weight, and Weight Distribution) use vehicle pitch. We suggest taking measurements with the minimum pressure recommended by the manufacturer (often 5-10 psi), then using this same pressure when using HaulGauge in the future.

You will need to calibrate by going to Settings (gear symbol in the top right corner) -> Calibration -> Suspension Weighing. The app will guide you through a 2-minute process where you open the tailgate/liftback and sit on the back of the vehicle.
Auto-leveling

The other functions (Payload, Tongue Weight, Pin Weight, and Weight Distribution) use vehicle pitch, so they will not function properly unless auto-leveling is turned off. This is usually done in the vehicle’s console by putting the vehicle into “tire jack mode,” which must be turned off before driving.

You will need to calibrate by going to Settings (gear symbol in the top right corner) -> Calibration -> Suspension Weighing. The app will guide you through a 2-minute process where you open the tailgate/liftback and sit on the back of the vehicle.

Does HaulGauge work on lifted trucks?

Yes. However, our calibrations are all done on stock vehicles. We would suggest doing your own calibrations if you have modified your truck. To calibrate, go to Settings (gear symbol in the top right corner) -> Calibration -> Suspension Weighing.

Does HaulGauge work if I have bump stops (e.g. Timbrens)?

Yes.

The main Weigh feature, which weighs the vehicle and anything attached to it, will function just fine with bump stop suspension enhancements.

The other functions (payload, tongue weight, pin weight, and weight distribution) use vehicle pitch, so a short calibration will be required. To calibrate, go to Settings (gear symbol) -> Calibration -> Suspension Weighing.

The app will guide you through a 2 minute process where you open the tailgate and sit on the back of the truck. From other users we have learned that, to be accurate, the calibration weight needs to be heavy enough (i.e. 2 people) for the bump stops to engage. The process usually requires a third person to check when the bump stops make contact.

Will HaulGauge work with my tuner?

In general, the vehicle’s diagnostic port (OBD) will only communicate with one device at a time. Many customers just plug in the HaulGauge when they are weighing.

HaulGauge vehicle settings are all saved in the app, so unplugging does not require a new setup. If you decide to try an install with your tuner, you will need to hard mount HaulGauge (it can’t be dangling).

Device/App FAQ’s
Does HaulGauge require an internet connection?

An internet connection (either phone service/data or Wi-Fi) is required for the initial setup. After setup, HaulGauge requires no internet connection. Without an internet connection, HaulGauge will not be able to locate any preset calibrations and the user will be asked to go through a calibration procedure.
Will the HaulGauge app work with my device (phone)?

The HaulGauge app will work with:

Any iOS device (iPhone) with 10.3 or higher
Any Android device with 5.0 Lollipop or higher and is Bluetooth enabled

Will the HaulGauge app work on an iPad?

HaulGauge is currently supported on the iPhone only. The App Store does allow some iPhone apps to be downloaded to an iPad, but HaulGauge users have reported occasional problems. We are working on adding iPad support in the future.
